Successful Completion of Summer School on International Arbitration

IUS Faculty of Law (FLW) successfully completed the third Summer School on International Arbitration, which took place from September 10-16, 2023. Through its 10 modules, the Summer School justified the term “international” by welcoming 11 lecturers from 9 different countries and renowned universities along with students from 7 different countries.

Following the welcoming speeches by the IUS Vice-Rector, Assoc. Prof. Kanita Karađuzović-Hadžiabdić and FLW Dean Dr. Ena Kazić-Çakar, the Summer School started with the lecture by the distinguished Prof. Catherine Rogers of Bocconi University, Italy and Queen Mary University of London, UK that highlighted Arbitration on the Alternative Dispute Resolution Spectrum. Alongside her, participants had the privilege of attending lectures by our Assistant Professor Khaled Khwaileh on the Contours of the Arbitral Proceedings and Sen. Assist. Mirza Ljubović, MA on the three pillars of international arbitration. Next, Dr. Alessandra Guida from Queen's University Belfast delivered her lecture on technology in international arbitration and online hearings, followed by esteemed Prof. Dr Kabir Duggal, Columbia Law School and Fordham Law School who taught on Investment arbitration.  Professor Dr. Zlatan Meškić of Prince Sultan University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia focused on the CISG in the Western Balkans.

The fifth day of the Summer School was marked by two important lectures by Dr. Nevena Jevremović, Lecturer at Faculty of Law, University of Aberdeen, Scotland whose lecture was on the challenges of CISG, advantages and disadvantages in Cross-border Commerce and Dr. Boris Praštalo, Lecturer at Faculty of Law of Brunel University, London who highlighted issues pertaining to Corruption in International Arbitration. Assoc. Prof. Emir Sudžuka, Notary, Vice-Rector of University of Vitez and Adjunct Professor at Faculty of Law of International University of Sarajevo and Fahira Brodlija LLM, Lecturer at Faculty of Law of International University of Sarajevo focused their lectures on the investor-state dispute settlement in the Western Balkans. 

On the final day of the event, the participants were treated to a surprise address by Prof. Dr. Stefan Kröll. Stefan Kröll is Professor of International Dispute Resolution at Bucerius Law School in Hamburg and one of the directors of the Willem C. Vis Arbitration Moot Court.  

The Summer School was closed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kazić-Çakar, Dean of FLW who thanked all the lecturers for their valuable time and energy in sharing their knowledge and experience in the field and students for their undivided dedication to participating and acquiring new knowledge. 

We are looking forward to new editions of the summer school in the future.
