On April 23, 2025, the Faculty of Law hosted an online lecture via Microsoft Teams, delivered by esteemed doctoral researcher Ms. Halima Kouba from Chouaib Doukkali University, Morocco. The event was moderated by Assist. Prof. Dr. Mirza Ljubović and was officially opened by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ena Kazić-Çakar, the respected Dean of the Faculty of Law IUS.
Ms. Kouba gave an insightful presentation on legal translation's critical aspects and challenges. Her talk emphasized the severe implications of mistranslations within legal contexts, highlighting specific cases where linguistic inaccuracies significantly influenced judicial outcomes and legal interpretations. Historical examples, such as the mistranslation of the term "mokusatsu" during the Potsdam Declaration, were discussed to underline the broader diplomatic and judicial consequences of translation errors.
The presentation also addressed cultural and linguistic complexities faced by translators and offered practical strategies to mitigate potential inaccuracies through robust collaborative practices and rigorous quality assurance.
