Faculty of Law Students Visit the Council of Europe Office in Sarajevo

On Monday, May 22, 2026, students of the IUS Faculty of Law (FLW) visited the Office of the Council of Europe in Sarajevo as part of the Faculty’s ongoing efforts to bridge legal theory with real-world institutional practice.

The visit was organized by Asst. Prof. Dr. Hana Šarkinović-Köse, who teaches Constitutional Law II at the Faculty, and was honored by the participation of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ena Kazić-Çakar, Dean of the Faculty of Law. The group of students was warmly received by Ms. Bojana Urumova, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Sarajevo, and her team, who generously dedicated their time to engaging directly with the students.

During the meeting, the hosts presented the mandate and structure of the Council of Europe - Europe’s leading human rights organization - and explained how its standards, conventions, and monitoring mechanisms translate into concrete improvements in the everyday lives of citizens. Discussions covered the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, the strengthening of democratic institutions and the rule of law, as well as the role of the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights. Particular attention was given to the Council of Europe Action Plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina 2026–2029, through which the Organization continues to support reforms in justice, human rights protection, and democratic governance.

Students gained valuable insight into how the abstract principles they study in the classroom - constitutional safeguards, fundamental rights, and democratic accountability - are upheld and advanced through the daily work of an international institution operating in their own country. The interactive format allowed students to ask questions and engage in meaningful dialogue with the hosts.

The Faculty of Law extends its sincere gratitude to Ms. Urumova and the Council of Europe Office in Sarajevo for their warm welcome and substantive presentation. Visits of this kind remain a cornerstone of the Faculty’s commitment to providing students with a learning experience that goes beyond the textbook - connecting legal theory with institutional practice and expanding their horizons as future legal professionals committed to the values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
