PORUKA DEKANA

Welcome to the website of the Faculty of Law at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS). In your search for an educational home, look no further because you are precisely where you need to be. A rating of universities by Webometrics published in January of 2018 ranked IUS second out of 62 higher educational institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and first among private universities.

The decision you made to study law is one that, if you handle well, you will forever cherish. By opting for law, you have entered into a challenging, yet potentially rewarding field of human endeavor.  For law is more than a line of work; it is a calling driven by many key commitments, among them that we are all equal before the law; and that our government is based on the rule of law, not the idiosyncrasies of powerful men and women.  Imagine living in a society where there is no justice, no respect for basic human decency, and no rule of law. And how do we achieve economic progress in a society where there is no rule of law? At IUS we will work with you 24/7 to help you realize your legal educational goal.

In the aftermath of the civil war, our country needs lawyers like you to tackle with verve, responsibility, and sensitivity, the challenges of transitional justice and accountability that need to be made to deter atrocities. Therefore, you not only benefit yourself when you enter into the study of law, you also benefit society in the broadest sense.

The Faculty of Law at IUS was established in 2015 with the mission of providing legal education of the highest quality to students in the First, Second and Third Cycles of studies, meaning from undergraduate all the way to the Ph.D., consistent with the Bologna educational system practiced here at this university. Our vision is to be one of the leading Law faculties in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Balkans.

The beauty of legal education at IUS is that we just don’t teach our students, we also mentor them. Our goal is to prepare students who hit the road running because they have acquired the requisite professional skill necessary to pass the bar in the jurisdiction they choose to practice or the foundation for success in advanced level studies for graduates who choose this career avenue.

I am not done; there are two other advantages to studying law here at IUS that I would like to highlight. The two are Ilidža and Sarajevo, in no particular order, since they intersect.  Ilidža (pronounced i.lĭ.dza) is the suburb in central Bosnia and Herzegovina where our law school is strategically located. With its metro population of nearly 48,000 residents, Ilidža is the chief suburb of Sarajevo. Surrounded by peaceful mountains, Ilidža is built on fairly level ground. In addition to these pleasant geographic features, the suburb is known for the natural environment of its surroundings and historical tradition dating back to Neolithic times. It is adjacent to the Sarajevo International Airport and the Vrelo Bosne spring as well as less than 40-minute drive to Sarajevo city center. That takes us next to Sarajevo as the next reason to study law here at IUS rather than elsewhere.

With a population of nearly 300,000 residents, Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The number swells to over 555,000 inhabitants when we use the Sarajevo Metropolitan Area (SMA), including Sarajevo Canton, East Sarajevo, and nearby municipalities, as marker. Sarajevo is the political, social and cultural center of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a prominent center of culture in the Balkans, with its region-wide influence in entertainment, media, fashion, and the arts. Due to its rich history of religious and cultural diversity, Sarajevo is  called by some the "Jerusalem of Europe" and for others the "Jerusalem of the Balkans." Partly because of the extensive reconstruction it has undergone since the war, Sarajevo is the fastest growing city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lonely Planet (a travel guide) named Sarajevo as the 43rd best city in the world, and in December 2009 listed it as one of the top ten cities to visit in 2010.
